Salman Khan's 'Jai Ho' failed at the box-office

A hugely awaited film prior to release, Salman Khan’sJai Ho’ has failed to live up to the mammoth expectations the actor generated. The box office collections have failed to make its mark in the Bollywood business records. Although competing with ‘Dhoom 3’, barely a month after the film’s release was certainly not an easy task, Salman Khan’s name failed to create much of a furore at the Box Office. The Khan vs Khan battle ended in a dud with no Salman posing competition whatsoever.

When comparing ‘Jai Ho’ to Salman’s earlier releases too, ‘Jai Ho’ has failed miserably with an opening weekend figure of Rs. 60.68 crore. The performance of his last three films were:

1. ‘Bodyguard’ (2011) – Rs. 88.75 crore

2. ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012) – Rs. 100.16 crore

3. ‘Dabanng 2’ (2012) – Rs. 65 crore

On the other hand, ‘Dhoom 3’ had an astounding Rs. 174.98 crore during first six days of business at the Box Office, Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Krrish 3’ did a whopping Rs. 153.08 crore and Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Chennai Express’ did a Rs. 130.35 crore.

About ‘Jai Ho’, trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted yesterday, ‘#JaiHo Wknd 60.68 crore, Mon 9.50 crore, Tue 7.30 crore, Wed 5.80 crore. Total: Rs. 83.28 crore nett. Indian biz only’.

The heartening news for the movie is that it has managed to slip into the elite Rs. 100 crore club thanks to its overseas collections. Albeit a slow start in the international audience, word of mouth helped the film pick up and fare exceptionally well in the UAE – GCC region, Pakistan and USA – Canada collecting a decent Rs. 22.38 crore. Overall, the collection till Wednesday was a Rs. 4.5 million (Rs. 28.20 crore). In Pakistan, the film collected Rs. 2.21 crore in the opening weekend.

With no competition to provide to ‘Dhoom 3’ which had the highest opening day domestic box office collections of Rs. 36.22 crore, ‘Jai Ho’ managed a meagre Rs. 17.75 crore on its opening day. Although January 26 saw the film collecting Rs. 26 crore, it could not sustain it the next day.Salman Khan took to Twitter to thank his fans for their support after taking the blame earlier for the low performance of the film at the Box Office. According to what film trade analyst Komal Nahta has to say, the film has already made a profit of Rs. 100 crore. She said, ‘For all those asking, Salman and Sohail have made Rs. 100 crore profit in JAI HO.’
